Everybody was in panic. Immediately the doors and windows were tightly shut and were blocked off by massive bags of rice. Nobody could leave or enter the overcrowded shop. There was an absence of light; the mist caused a murky darkness. The sun was concealed by the mist. The mist inhaled the light provided by the glowing spark of the sun. Condensation slid down the window as though it had just finished raining. Suddenly there was a silent pause amongst the shoppers. The thought of not living to see daylight flew across the minds of frightened ones. A women then screams “We’re all gonna die!” as though she wanted everyone to panic in depression. All that could be heard was the screaming of petrified shoppers. Tears fell from the faces of the young whilst parents broke down in distress beside them. Not a living soul could begin to comprehend the immensity of the dangerous situation. Responsibly the shop owner went around trying to reassure people that everything would be okay. You could see in his eyes that he was just as afraid as everybody else, the only difference was he tried to stop people from panicking and crying. In one corner of the shop people were being attracted by a woman preaching, she was persuading ill-hearted sinners to repent since she believed judgement day was swiftly approaching. In another corner of the shop, couples were kissing and caressing; making sure they spend what would seem to be their final moments together.

Four brave men were willing to sacrifice themselves in order to observe the phenomenon in the outside world. Amongst the four men stood a soldier as tall as the Eiffel Tower, he had a muscular physique, his fists were tightly clenched and you could see the blue veins popping ferociously out of his large hands. The second person was the owner of the shop. Large man; potentially overweight. Terror devoured his soul. He wanted to leave the shop and get back home to his family knowing something was out there destroying mankind. The third man was an ordinary person trying to figure out what was happening. He was a middle aged man (30-40) with an authorized gun in his back pocket. This man was an experienced shooter and was the only person with a gun. The last person was one of the shop workers. A very young adult. He was lanky and skinny with ginger hair and freckles. His personality overwhelmed everyone. Fright never consumed him. You could tell that he was very childish and stubborn because he believed he could take down the monster with one hand tied behind his back. The fate of the shell shocked shoppers were entrusted in their hands. These four men tread past the shoppers; into the basement without attracting attention.

Their plan was to open the garage door and see what was lurking around causing the mist. Difficult decisions were enforced upon them. How would they do this? Who would go into the world of the unknown? Eager to make himself look like a hero, the ginger haired fellow volunteered without hesitation. Fearful of what may happen, the soldier did not want to allow the young man to leave. However, everybody else concurred to his decision of leaving because he showed no fear, in fact was overjoyed to be the leaving the isolated store.

They opened the garage door slightly but gradually to prevent anything from entering the shop. The mist entered the shop slowly; the mist smelt like some sort of gas; the mist felt numb and cutting. The young man had rope tied to him so if anything happened he could be pulled back into the shop. He walked around and kept on looking back to check if he could still see the garage door.

He then shouted “ We’re safe, there’s nothing out here”. A feeling of ease was bestowed upon him. Overjoyed and Delighted, the thought of being safe made him feel tranquil.

Suddenly he could hear the voices of three men echoing in the distance, “run you’re going to die…behind you”. At that very instant the young man had a numinous feeling. He started running back as fast as he could when suddenly an octopus like tentacle grabbed him by the bottom of his legs. As soon as the tentacle made contact with his legs, there was a puddle of blood in the surrounding area. The tentacle was draining the young man’s blood.

The soldier and the middle aged man then ran out in desperation to try and save the young man. You could see the muscular physique of the soldier as he united hands with the young man, it was a battle of tug-of-war. Would the young man survive? The tentacle latched onto the young man and there was an immediate sound of steam burning through his skin. Blood was gushing out of his body. You could tell by the expression on the young man’s face that he didn’t want to die, tears streamed from his face. Ear bursting screams revealed the amount of pain he was in.

The shop manager shouted “Leave him, there is no hope for his survival”, the two men fled in order to save their own lives. The boys hand reached out crying “save me…please”.
The light started diminishing as the creaking garage door was closed, where they would remain stuck, hidden in the mist.

There have been 157 deaths in London between the years 2005-2013. It is shocking to believe that 105 people have been stabbed; 30 have been shot; 13 have been beaten ; 2 have been burnt; 3 have been strangled and 4 have fallen into the others category. In this speech I am going to be exploring why teenagers carry weapons, what the reasons are for them to resort to carrying these weapons and what we could do to prevent this.

Teenagers tend to carry weapons around for many different reasons such as: self-protection (if they feel they are likely to get approached by someone they’re afraid of), gang activity and in some cases, simply because they are easy to access. People are often shocked at the high statistics of knife crime and I was shocked and dis made at the figures behind this. It is outrageous to believe why so many teenagers carry lethal weapons. Maybe it is because they are forced to or have no choice but to use these dangerous weapons.

However using these weapons is clearly not the only solution to problems. If police catch anybody in possession of a knife, they can be put into prison for  up to 6 months! It doesn’t matter whether they use the knife or not, just it being in your possession can put people in a lot of trouble.

Have you ever been threatened? Have you ever witnessed knife crime? Have you ever been stabbed? Or have you received a death note? If yes then you are more likely to carry a harmful weapon. This is because you’ve had an unpleasant feeling. You have experienced terror and you’re most likely to be scared and want to protect yourself. The first thing teenagers think to do is protect themselves. Carry such weapons. Risk their lives. They do not think of the consequences of their actions They do not stop and think, what if I get caught or what if I get into big trouble, what will happen then? Teenagers tend to keep their problems to themselves and act anti-social. The best thing to do is ask for advice, just sit down and speak to a mature adult. Try to get the problem sorted out.

Peer pressure. Peer pressure is another reason why teenagers carry weapons. Peer pressure influences people to do things they may not like or want to do. Their friends do it so they feel they have to carry a weapon in order to fit into their social group. Teenagers are so petrified of being forsaken by friends that they will do absolutely anything (even break the law) to be accepted by their peers. This is wrong. Teens shouldn’t have to give into peer pressure or feel intimidated by their friends. Most teenagers know the difference between good and bad. They have a conscience. Most teens determine to ignore what they know is wrong and allow themselves to be influenced by peers.

On the 7th of December 2013 a photographer named Adam Patterson began photographing London gang leader, “Vipoh”. This was shown in the newspaper “The Guardian”. The figure of knife crime in London was 14,192 in 2007-8 but significantly decreased to 11,376 in 2012-13. Whilst being interviewed, Adam Patterson asked why he carries knives and other weapons. Vipoh replied “ To make me look intimidating, so others will be afraid of me”. When he was young and was new to this way of life he chose the name ‘Vipoh’, his close friends told him that somebody was looking for him because his “tag” (the name he goes by) was similar. Vipoh was horrified and didn’t know what to do. He went down the wrong path. When the boy and a couple of his friends approached Vipoh, he brought out his knife and the bunch of boys were afraid so they left Vipoh alone. That was probably the most significant decision that he was forced to make. The clear impact to this is that he lived a life of a teenage boy committing crimes and getting involved in gang violence. This is an example of why teenagers carry weapons.

Male teenagers are much more antisocial and are much more likely to carry weapond than females are. This is because boys dislike expressing their emotions and feelings. They tend to take matters into their own hands rather than speaking  to somebody about their problems or worries. One solution for a possession of weapon crime is to think before you act (be careful of the decision you’re making); think of the consequences of your actions. The second solution is to speak to a person or a specialist about your problems. Also we should enforce more severe laws on the possession of such weapons. Deterance must be established to address this problem of dangerous weapons. People will be too worried to have them in the first place let alone use them. Prevent is better than cure. We should all put down the weapons of death.

Dear Ms Samantha Taylor,

I just recently read your article about teenagers using social media too much. You disagree with the claims made about teenagers by these other individuals. I strongly disagree with you in the fact that these ideas about teenagers are wrong. Technology is sabotaging the minds of teenagers. Teenagers are unaware of how much time they spending on their phones or computers interacting with others. I feel the need to speak out and contribute to what is being reported about teenagers. This is because I want to inform teenagers about why they should spend less time socialising over the internet and more time socialising face-to-face.

Teenagers are afraid of socialising in person therefore hide behind their computer screens. This is due to the fact that they have spent most of their lives interacting over the internet making it seem impossible to express themselves in person. Jonathan Franzen believes that online socialising is causing a shallow culture and makes teenagers unable to socialise face to face. I completely agree. Most teenagers tend to become introvert because they do not get enough practice on real communication. Speaking through the internet isn’t good for shy people because it will only make them more shy and will make it harder for them to approach difficult situations such as communicating face to face. Teenager use social media to find new people to speak to. Most of the time they speak to the person online but would be too afraid to speak to the person face to face. Lack of real communication skills will start to kick in and there will be a sense of awkwardness.

Teenagers usually get into relationships online. Teenagers will be incapable of expressing emotions to their partner in front of them. It makes you ask yourself whether you’re in a meaningful relationship or not. Relationships lose all their romance when they’re based on social media. In addition teenagers get into relationships with people they do not know. They fall in love over the internet. This is bad and dangerous because you do not actually know who you are in a relationship with. The information your partner may have told you could be false. The pictures they send to you could be false (picture may not be them). The age they tell you could be false. Even the little things they tell you about themselves like their likes and dislikes and favourite colour could be false. You cannot 100% trust the person you’re in a relationship with because you’ve never met them or interacted with them in person. When speaking on-line, teenagers are unaware of what they do; spreading their personal information on-line may put them at serious risk. Broadcasting your phone number, what school you go to, where you live and your full name is extremely dangerous. People can get hold of your information and attempt to steal your identity.

As the writer Susan Greenfield’s states, “We could be raising a hedonistic generation…are in distinct danger of detaching themselves from what the rest of us would consider the real world.”. The word hedonistic tells us that teens seek pleasure by using the computer and going on social media. They’ve become addicted to social networking. Teenagers are ‘detaching’ themselves from ‘the real world’ because they are afraid. They are afraid of communicating face to face. They are in their comfort zone when speaking on-line because they are free to say anything they please without a physical reaction. Cyber bullying is more likely to happen to a person who gets bullied outside their house. These people being bullied that are socialising on-line are at risk of being bullied on-line. Since they’re afraid of speaking out in public or confronting their bullies, they try to speak out on-line because they have the opportunity to interact with new people. They then tend to go on and express themselves to these people and to seek sympathy. Cyber bullying could get to a stage where people are being depressed, having anxiety, severe isolation and in extreme unfortunate cases suicide. Being addicted to social media is not a good thing. There are a lot of dangers. Teenagers tend to use social media such as Facebook, Snapchat and Texting to interact. Social media has become a daily procedure for them. It has become a necessity. What they do not notice is that the more time they spend communicating with other people on-line, the harder they will find it to communicate with people face to face. Teenagers are less cautious of what they say to people on-line because they are not physically in front of them.

In conclusion I believe that teenagers should continue to be presented in this light. I feel it is needed to get the point across that spending too much time on social media is inadequate. I strongly urge teenagers to spend less time sitting at home going on social networking sites and more time going outside in public, trying to meet new people and communicating with others face to face.

Yours Sincerely,

How does Shakespeare and Shelley explore power and control through language structure and characterisation

In this essay I am going to be exploring power and control through language structure and characterization in the two books ‘The Tempest’ by Shakespeare and ‘Frankenstein’ by Mary Shelley. Power is the ability to influence others in a huge way to enable them to do something or act in a certain way. Control is when you have the ability to influence others in a huge way and enable them to do what you want them to do. The Tempest begins on a boat with Alonso (the king of Naples) and his entourage. The boat is being swung around in the storm. The storm is caused by one of the main characters, Prospero. Power and Control is mainly explored through a character called Prospero who was meant to be the Duke of Milan. Instead Prospero studies magic through his books and puts his work as Duke of Milan behind him. His younger brother Antonio steals the title of Duke of Milan from him and is now seeking revenge on him using his two slaves, Ariel and Caliban. Power and control is explored in very different ways through Prospero’s slaves, Ariel and Caliban. The book Frankenstein is about a doctor called Victor Frankenstein. He doesn’t agree with nature so he tries to manipulate nature by creating life. He does this by obtaining body parts from dead people and attaching the body parts together. He then uses his knowledge of science to bring the body to life. After he manages to do this, Frankenstein notices that he’s created a monster and wants nothing to do with it so he decides to abandon it. The monster then seeks revenge on Victor Frankenstein and does everything in its power to destroy Victor’s life. He does this by killing everyone Victor loves (family and friends). Power and control is explored through Victor and his monster. Both books are similar in both context and events but were written in different times and were influenced to write the book by different people. Many times in this book, you see that both the monster and Victor fights for Power and control by trying to take control of their situation. Mary Shelley was deeply influenced and inspired by Lord Byron. Lord Byron suggested that everyone write a ghost story. Frankenstein is based on Mary Shelley’s experience in Switzerland. A lot of the settings in the book ‘Frankenstein’ is based on her own life, things she saw in the news and interesting things. The creation of the book happened through a series of events. There was a thunderstorm the continued for days and lead Mary Shelley, his husband and all their friends to stay indoors. Lord Byron wanted everyone to tell a ghost story. At the time Mary Shelley wasn’t prepared but wanted to write about the mysterious fears of nature and arouse a stimulating horror. The tempest was based on an English fleet crashing into an island due to a tempest. At the time everybody knew about this and it was the root of conversation. Shakespeare was majorly influenced by this and wrote the play “the Tempest”.

In act 1 Scene 1 of the Tempest, there is a big disruption of hierarchy. The Boatswain has power and control over the rest of the crew mates. This is because he is the most experienced person on the ship and is in charge of the ship. He has authority and the ability to speak anyway he likes to the crew mates because of this. In different circumstances, Boatswain would not be able to speak to the shipmates like this because of their status. He would not be able to tell Alonso (King of Naples) or Antonio (Duke of Milan) what to do or how to act. They are at the top in terms of hierarchy than the Boatswain. The only reason he’s able to speak to the important shipmates however he likes is because he is the ships officer; in charge of the equipment and the crew mates. The boatswain’s position on the boat allows him to exploit power and control on the ship and also allows him to have a major influence over the crew mates. Boatswain demands for respect. He does this by speaking boldly and confidently towards the very high status’ people in the ship. He makes them aware of his position on the ship and lets them know that he isn’t afraid of speaking up and giving/instructions to people on the ship.
An example of inappropriate language towards the crew mate in act 1 scene 1 is when boatswain says “Do you not hear him? You mar our labour. Keep your cabins–you do assist the storm”. The language technique is very aggressive. This quotation shows violent language. Boatswain speaks to Antonio the Duke of Milan and the rest of the crew mates as though they are equals. Boatswain starts of by asking Antonio a rhetorical question. People usually ask others rhetorical question when they are frustrated and annoyed with something that the person has done or said. The Boatswain is annoyed at Antonio and the rest of the crew mates because they are not following his instructions. He is also slightly angry at them because of this. “You mar our labour” the boatswain tells the Antonio and his companions that he is in the way of the boatswain and mariners work. They are ruining the hard work being done by the mariners. The Boatswain then goes on to instruct the crew mates to “keep their cabins”. He does this because he believes that it is the best and most sensible thing to do in order to ensure their safety. In a different situation, the boatswain would have no power over anybody on the ship and would be unable to give orders. “You do assist the storm”. This is a case of pathetic fallacy because the storm is violent and strong in its nature as is the boatswain by telling his shipmates that they assist the storm in such a violent manner. He tells Antonio and companions by not following his instructions and ruining the hard work being done that they are assisting the storm. This language structure is very strong and effective as we can infer that the boatswain is saying that the crew mates are helping the storm out by not listening to given orders and getting in the way of the mariners. He uses his position on the ship to be able influence the crew mates to do whatever he wants using power and control.

In chapter 2 of Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein is a spectator to the injurious power of nature itself. He witnesses the wrath of the lightening take down a tree during a dreadful storm. Victor Frankenstein was astonished by the power of lightening and wanted to acquire such power. “The thunder burst at once with frightful loudness from various quarters of heavens. I remained, while the storm lasted, watching its progress with curiosity and delight”, this experience activated Victors thirst for knowledge. He had friends who knew more of this power, became their disciple and learned that it was the power of electricity that took down the tree. He was then inspired to use the power of electricity to create life instead of destroying life. “To an eager to learn…possessed attraction for me”. Victor Frankenstein now set his goal on creating life and was “eager to learn”. He wants to be able to control nature and defy the laws of physics and play God by creating life. During this lightening scene, he was angry at nature but was also calm at the same time. The fact that he is angry and calm at the same time reflects on his character, then you’re able to see Victor’s conflicts. This shows that he struggles to gain power and control. “the mysterious soul of man that occupied me”. Victor believes that a “mysterious soul” had power over him because he did not know why Mary Shelley suggests that Victor wants power over nature. He wants to be able to control the link between life and death. At this time, Shelley may have been influenced to write about electricity creating life. The Aldini experiment is when a doctor called Giovanni Aldini managed to get hold of a dead body and uses electricity to make certain parts of the dead body move. To do this he used galvanism, he made muscles move with electric currents. Shelley heard about this and decided to use that idea to bring Frankenstein to life (using electric currents).

In Act 1 Scene 2 of The Tempest. Prospero is speaking to his daughter Miranda about the storm. Why he sent Ariel to m .”.”.”.” create the storm and about what his brother done to him to cause such anger towards his younger brother Antonio. Prospero then goes on to speak to Ariel. Ariel is Prospero’s slave, he has control over Ariel and Ariel does whatever Prospero tells him to do (e.g. cause the storm). Prospero says “approach, my Ariel come”. This is a short sentence that includes imperative language, this shows his power over Ariel. Prospero demands respect from Ariel, this shows the control he has over Ariel. Prospero ordered Ariel to come to him. The words “my Ariel” shows that he controls Ariel. It means that Ariel is Prospero’s possession; Ariel belongs to Prospero. This language shows Prospero’s Power over Ariel. It tells us that Prospero has total control over Ariel. Ariel then goes on to say “All hail, great master, grave sir, hail! I come to answer thy best pleasure” Ariel tries to please his master. He does this by using an effective flattering technique – hyperbole where he exaggerates Prospero’s power and worth, for example with the words “great master” he inflates his ego, Which then shows Ariel’s submission as he is under the control of Prospero.

In Act 1 Scene 2 Prospero starts speaking to his second slave-Caliban. He treats Caliban much more differently to how he speaks to Ariel. This is because Ariel respects Prospero and is forever seeking to please his master whilst Caliban doesn’t have respect for Prospero and isn’t afraid of the power she has over him. Prospero says “Thou poisonous slave, got by the devil himself. Upon thy wicked dam, come forth”. From this we can infer that Prospero has some sort of anger towards Caliban because he uses violent language for example “poisonous slave”, the word poisonous is an adjective and it suggests that Caliban has no right of freedom because he is a slave. Also that hes being used for forced labour. I can also infer that the word poisonous could mean hes a threat to Prospero. Rebellion. Its implying that his uncivilized nature is infectious. The phrase “come forth” is a command, again this is aggressive language and Prospero tries to intimidate Caliban by insulting him and showing no sign of fear towards him. Caliban begins to curse Prospero by saying “As wicked dew…brushed with ravens feather…blister you all o’e!” The fact that Caliban dares to insult his superior shows the absence of control because Caliban does not fear and respect Prospero. Morning dew was thought to be unhealthy and used in magic potions; Caliban wishes this upon his master Prospero. The raven bird is often associated with witchcraft. This shows that there is a lack of power and control because Prospero cannot control his slave Caliban and Caliban is able to disrespect his master, Caliban is not intimidated by Prospero at all.

In Chapter 5 of Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein gets caught up in his emotions and runs away from his creation. “How can I describe my emotions at this catastrophe”. This is emotive language for example the word “catastrophe”, the fact that his creation has come to life has inflicted a sudden pain and suffering to Victor himself. Victor feels like he has no power over the situation, he feels like hes lost control of his physical and mental state. He is unable to control his emotions. Victor feels that the birth of his creation was a disaster and is instantaneously regretting creating the monster. He wanted to create something beautiful and magnificent but he ended up creating a horrific monster who he ran away from at first sight. “Unable to endure the aspect of the being i had created” from this we can infer that Victor is going through a stage of suffering, he has to suffer patiently in pain. Victor cannot comprehend what is going on. He’s completely disgusted by the sight of the monster.

In Chapter 9/10 of Frankenstein, Victor attempts to regain power and control over the situation of the monster. “The valley is more wonderful and sublime”, sublime is when you see or experience something so beautiful that words cannot explain it. He tries to regain control over his emotional and mental state by going to the Swiss Alps. Victor goes to the valley of Chamounix to recover his sense. He feels at peace when he’s in the sublime and he feels like he’s able to escape reality. “Scenes afforded the greatest consolation”, the setting of the scene allowed Victor to be at ease and escape reality. Victor is able to receive comfort after a loss. He’s able to gain control of his mental state and emotions.

In Chapter 20 of Frankenstein, Victor starts making the female creature that Frankenstein’s monster had demanded and then stops during the creation of the monster.”Tore to pieces the thing on which i was engaged. The wretch saw me destroy the creature”. Victor does this to try and regain control of the situation. Previously Frankenstein’s monster had power of Victor because he was able to influence Victor into making a female Monster. This is because Frankenstein’s monster intimidates and threatens Frankenstein into doing this. Frankenstein’s monster decides to retaliate by killing his wife on his wedding day. By doing this he once again gains power and control over the situation. Frankenstein’s monster has successfully killed everybody Frankenstein is close to and loves.

IGCSE Coursework – Writing to Argue (2)

There have been 157 deaths in London between the years 2005-2013. It is shocking to believe that 105 people have been stabbed; 30 have been shot; 13 have been beaten ; 2 have been burnt; 3 have been strangled and 4 have fallen into the others category. In this essay I am going to be writing about why teenagers/young adults carry knives, the effect of this and the reasons behind this.

Teenagers tend to carry knives around for many different reasons such as: self-protection (if they feel they are likely to get approached by someone they’re afraid of), gang activity and in some cases, simply because they are easy to access. People wonder why the statistics of knife crime is so high. It is egregious to believe why so many teenager/young adults carry knives. Maybe it is because they are forced to or have no choice but to use these dangerous weapons.

However using knives is clearly not the only solution to problems. If police catch anybody in possession of a knife, they can be put into prison for  up to 6 months! It doesn’t matter whether they use the knife or not, just being in your possession can put people in a lot of trouble.

Have you ever been threatened? Have you ever witnessed somebody being stabbed? Have you ever been stabbed? Or have you received a death note? If yes then you are more likely to carry a harmful weapon. This is because you’ve had an unpleasant feeling. You have experienced terror and you’re most likely to be scared and want to protect yourself. The first thing teenagers and young adults think to do is protect themselves. Carry a knife. Risk their lives. They do not think of the consequences of their actions They do not stop and think, what if I get caught or what if I get into big trouble, what will happen then? Teenagers/young adults tend to keep their problems to themselves and act anti-social. The best thing to do is ask for advice, just sit down and speak to a mature adult. Try to get the problem sorted out.

When he was young and was new to this way of life he chose the name ‘Vipoh’, his close friends told him that somebody was after him because his “tag” (the name he goes by) was similar. This is an example of why teenagers/young adults carry knives.

Male teenagers/young adults are much more antisocial than females are. This is because boys dislike expressing their emotions and feelings. They tend to take matters into their own hands rather than speaking  to somebody about their problems or worries. One solution for a knife crime is to think before you act (be careful of the decision you’re making); think of the consequences of your actions. The second solution is to speak to a person or a specialist about your problems. Also we should enforce more severe laws on the possession and utilisation of knives. People will be too worried to have them in the first place let alone use them. Prevent is better than cure. We should all put down the knives of death.

IGCSE Coursework – Writing to Describe (1)

Everybody was in panic. Immediately the doors and windows were tightly shut and were blocked off by massive bags of rice. Nobody could leave or enter the overcrowded shop. Furthermore there was an absence of light; the mist caused a murky darkness. The sun was concealed by the mist. The mist inhaled the light provideth by the glowing spark of the sun. Condensation slid down the window as though it had just finished raining. Suddenly there was a silent pause amongst the shoppers. The thought of not living to see daylight flew across the minds of  frightened ones. A women then screams “ We’re all gonna die” as though she wanted everyone to panic in depression. All that could be heard was the screaming of petrified shoppers. Tears fell from the faces of the young whilst parents brokedown in distress beside them. Not a living soul could begin to comprehend the immensity of the dangerous situation. Responsibly the shop owner went around trying to reassure people that everything would be alright. You could see in his eyes that he was just as afraid as everybody else, the only difference was he tried to stop people from panicking and crying. In one corner of the shop people were being attracted by a woman preaching. She was persuading ill-hearted sinners to repent since she believed judgement day was swiftly approaching. In another corner of the shop, couples were kissing and caressing; making sure they spend  what would seem to be their final moments together.

Four brave men were willing to sacrifice themselves in order to observe the phenomenon in the outside world. Amongst the four men stood a soldier as tall as the Eiffel Tower. He had a muscular physique. His fists were tightly clenched and you could see the blue veins popping ferociously out of his large hands. The second person was the owner of the shop. He was a very large man. Overweight. He was the most terrified of them all. He wanted to leave the shop and get back home to his family but they all refused saying that there’s something out there destroying mankind. The third man was an ordinary person trying to figure out what was happening. He was a middle aged man (30-40) with an authorized gun in his back pocket. He’s an experienced shooter and he was the only person with a gun. The last person was one of the shop workers. He looked very young as though he just came out of university. He was lanky and skinny with ginger hair and freckles. He had a big personality. He wasn’t worried about anything. You could tell that he was very childish and stubborn because he said he could take down the monster with one hand tied behind his back and his eyes closed. The fate of the shell shocked shoppers were entrusted in their hands. These four men tread past the shoppers; into the basement without attracting attention.

Their plan was to open the garage door. See what was lurking around causing the mist. Difficult decisions were forced upon them. How would they do this? Who would go into the world of the unknown?.

The mist entered the shop slowly; the mist smelt like some sort of gas; the mist felt numbing and cutting. The young man had rope tied to him so if anything happened he could be pulled back into the shop. He walked around and kept on looking back to check if he could still see the garage door.

He then shouted “ We’re safe there’s nothing out here”. A feeling of ease was blessed upon him. Overjoyed. Delighted. The thought of being safe made him feel tranquil.

Suddenly he could hear the voices of three men echoing in the distance, “come back you’re going to die…look behind you”. At that very instant the young man had a numinous feeling. He started running back as fast as he could. An octopus like tentacle grabbed him by the bottom of his legs. As soon as the tentacle made contact with his legs, there was a puddle of blood surrounding him. The tentacle was draining the young man’s blood.

The soldier and the middle aged man then ran out in desperation to try and save the young man. The soldier grabbed onto the young mans hand and from there, was a battle of tug-of-war. Would the young man survive?. The tentacle latched onto the young man and you could hear steam burning through his skin. Blood was gushing out of his body. You could tell by the expression on the young mans face that he did not want to die. Tears dropped from his face. Ear bursting screaming revealed the amount of pain he was in.

The shop manager shouted “Leave him, there is no hope for survival” , the two men fled in order to save their own lives. The boys hand reached out crying “ save me…please”.

They closed the garage door where they would remain stuck, hidden in the mist.
